Appraisals
Janet Carlile is an Independent
antiques valuer and appraiser with a wide and varied training. In the 1970’s she
attended seminars of the Canadian Glass authority Gerald Stevens. Spurred on by
this and following a first degree in Canadian History at the University of
Waterloo Janet was offered a place on the prestigious Sotheby’s Decorative Arts
Course, in London, England. On return from the U.K. Janet began to lecture about
antiques at the University Toronto, Centennial College and Erindale College.
From 1983 to 1999 Janet Carlile lived throughout Europe eventually setting up
her own valuation and appraisal business in England. Janet values and appraises
antiques for the purpose of insurance, probate, separation and inventory for
private individuals, law firms and public institutions including Lancaster City
Museum in Lancashire, England and the Canadian Museum of Civilization in
Gatineau. Beginning in 1993 Janet created and taught a successful course at
Lancaster University in conjunction with the History Department called Artefacts
and Implements relating to Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian Social History. In
1994 Janet was awarded an MA from Lancaster University in Modern Social History
with a thesis based on the employment of women in the cotton industry during
WWI. From 1994 to 1999 Janet hosted and wrote “The A –Z of Antiques” for BBC
Radio, which aired weekly. From 1995- 1999 Janet Carlile was the Lancashire
representative of the provincial Auction house of Andrew Hartley based in
Ilkley, Yorkshire. From January of 1999 Janet worked as the Consultant Editor of
The Antiques Trade Mart Magazine, a magazine devoted to the sale of antiques.
In the autumn of 1999 Janet returned to Canada where she continues her writing,
lecturing, research and appraisal work. She is currently writing a popular
Antiques column for The Ottawa Citizen of the Southam Newspaper Group, which is
syndicated coast to coast. She is also researching the effects of the Glass
Excise tax on the styles of 18th and 19th century table glass and imagery of
19th Canada on English pottery. Recent clients include the House of Commons,
Rideau Hall, The Portuguese Embassy and the Canadian Museum of Civilization in
Hull. Janet was appointed the Curator/Director of the Arnprior and District
Museum in 2002. She sits on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Historical
Society and the Arnprior and District Archives. She continues to teach subject
specific courses at various venues in Ontario. Janet Carlile considers it a
conflict of interest to purchase items from clients and will not do so under any
circumstance.
